Texas Wildcats
Disney Information & Response
Overview

The Wildcats are going to Walt Disney World for Disney's Salute to Baseball Festival July 3-9! We will be in our hotel from the 2nd through the 9th.

Karen needs to know how many people you plan to bring. The team is paying for two people: your player and one other. (At least that's the plan right now.) Anyone else is $268.42 per person for the week. There are up to four persons per room. After four people, you have to get another room. Children two and under are free.

We are staying at the All-Star Resort. The prices for the packages are as follows. All packages include the following:

  • 7 night stay at All Star Sports Disney Resort

  • 3 Day Magic Your Way with Hopper option per person

  • credentials per participant

  • length of event tournament passes for the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex per spectator

If you are paying for extra people in the room that the Wildcats are paying for
1 extra person at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay $268.42
2 extra people at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay $536.84
If you have family coming and they are getting their own room or you need an extra room
1 room at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay for 1 person $972.48
1 room at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay for 2 people $1240.90
1 room at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay for 3 people $1509.39
1 room at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort for a 7-night stay for 4 people $1777.88

Team Guidelines During our Stay

We know that everyone is going to have a good time. But we are going there to play baseball. The team is going to spend about $14,000, and it's not to buy everyone a vacation—it's for a tournament. We expect the players to be able to perform during the games.

With this goal in mind, we must ask everyone not to allow their players to swim for more than an hour on the day before a game (or the day of if it's an afternoon or evening game). If we have a morning game and no game the next day, then the players can swim after the game.

We realize that when players go to a strange place with a swimming pool, they are going to want to swim. For this reason, we will also have designated team swim times during the "no swimming" times where we will swim for about an hour at appropriate times when it will not affect the next game too much.

We must ask that you use common sense about your park experiences too. Please do not wear out your players at the parks on the day before a game. If they spend all day in the heat on the day before an 8:00 AM game, they are not going to be up to par in the morning. Remember, it's going to be July. We'll have to get them to bed early for those morning games, especially if they've been at the parks during the day. Keep them hydrated too!

We will have a team room for the boys to hang out in at the Farrell room with a four-player X-box and a separate refrigerator and drink cooler for the team with healthy snacks and drinks. We might even bring another TV and a Game Cube. (Anyone who wants to contribute to the team refrigerator is welcome—healthy snacks and drinks only please.)

We realize that it will be a struggle to restrain them (and ourselves) in this atmosphere. However, we have to remember that while we are going to have a great time, we are first and foremost there to play baseball.

Saving Money: Getting There
You can save money, of course, by driving instead of flying.
Saving Money: Meals & Snacks
You can save even more money by bringing some of your own food. In both of the World Series that we've attended, we have brought a cooler stocked with food. You can keep a cooler in your room and bring nonperishable items with you, such as peanut butter and granola bars. This helps tremendously with those snacks that the kids invariably want throughout the week, and it helps you control what they eat! The players need to play up to full capacity, and eating junk all week isn't going to help them!

We recommend that you bring at least a small cooler to keep carrot sticks or other vegetables and fruits that your player will eat, as well as milk or juice that will be hard to find late at night when those cravings set in during the week. Apples with peanut butter makes a great healthy snack that most kids love and doesn't even have to be refrigerated! Remember to bring a knife and paper plates! You can save well over $100 eating just one meal a day in your room!

Saving Feet: Bring Walking Shoes
Disney parks mean walking a LOT! The players (and you) are going to need their feet blister-free at the field. This means having good-quality tennis shoes or walking shoes with good soles and socks while at the park. Crocs or sandals won't do; you (or they) will pay for that later! I'm bringing some blister medicine in case you don't take this advice, but please at least put good shoes and socks on the players so we'll have their feet during the games!
Saving your Sanity: Allow Plenty of Time for Check In

Don't plan on breezing through check in at the hotel. It will take a while. However, because we are special (with a group), we will have a group assistant cast member to help us check in. Go to the right at the lobby to the Group check in section. You can check in as early at 10 AM. Official check in time is 3:00 PM, but if you go earlier, they will hold your bags for you if your room is not ready—you could hit the parks if you wanted to have a short day. The group assistants are there from 10:00 to 7:00 typically. You defintely want to check in while they are there.

There will also be a Disney Sports Travel Specialist there in case anything is missing or wrong. This will be someone from the office that I have been working with to do our reservations.

Saving your Sanity (And Having a Good Time at the Park)
The best advice the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World gives is to take a nap in the middle of the day, right after lunch in the heat of the day when the parks are most crowded. It might seem like you will miss out, but it is really a life-saver. Do this when you plan to spend all day at the park (not a half day). Go back to your air-conditioned room and give everyone a couple-hour rest while the parks are overrun. Then go back and finish your touring plan when the park is less crowded. We did this every day when we went a few years back—every day but one, and we paid the price that one day: fighting crowds in the heat, long lines, then tired and grouchy kids and parents when we should have been having a great time while the parks weren't that crowded later. Do yourself a favor and don't skip the nap on all-day park days!
Saving your Sanity: Unoffical Guide to Walt Disney World

I wouldn't step foot in the park without reading this book! It is the difference between having a miserable time by waiting in long lines in the heat with whining children and frustrated parents versus zipping to the entrance of rides and having a great, rested time! We followed the guidelines in this book like a bible when we went in July a few years ago—during the July 4 holiday, at the height of the tourist season—and we couldn't believe how well it went! Except for one afternoon when we didn't follow the book... We stood in long lines in the heat, yelled at the kids, and finally gave up and went back to the hotel. Trust me. You need this book—especially since we'll have limited time at the parks.

Even if you don't read the book, use the touring plans from the back; they are the best things in the book!
